Naturopathic Medicine

Today's visit to "Vitale Medical Oasis", a naturopathic medicine clinic in Seattle, was a new experience to me .It gave me the opportunity to learn about this natural medicine. The two naturopathic physicians, Teresa Evans ND and Margie Ikeda ND, explained what is Naturopathic medicine, its components and practices. I learned for the first time that the naturopathic physicians receive primary care medical education and complete the same core science and medical curriculum as other medical doctors; additionally, they complete extensive coursework in nutrition, exercise, counseling, herbal medicine, homeopathy and physical medicine.

At "Vitale Medical Oasis", the physicians believe that the body has the ability to heal itself. Their role is to facilitate and increase this process, to identify and remove obstacles to health and recovery. They diagnose the illness by applying the standard conventional techniques including physical examination, laboratory tests and imaging; however, they treat it with natural therapies and remedies. In the naturopathy definition "every illness has an underlying cause, often in aspects of the lifestyle diet or habits of the individual.'' The NDs are trained to find and remove the underlying cause of a disease and not just masking the symptoms. They treat the whole-person; they take the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, genetic, environmental and social factors into account. The most important principle is educating the patient and encouraging self-responsibility for health to prevent major illness.

Naturopathic medicine consists of different treatments. Dr. Ikeda explained the IV therapy that provide vitamins and minerals to the patients during chronic or severe illnesses ( cancer, HIV,..), when the cells of the body have a difficult time using their mechanism to absorb necessary nutrients. This practice provides temporary assistance to the body to give the cells the nutrient boost they need in order jump start the body towards curing itself. Dr. Evans explained "Hydrotherapy" where alternate hot pads and cold pads are applied on patient's chest and back. This process gently strengthens the body’s immune system and naturally tones the hormonal systems leading to increased energy and vitality. This treatment is an excellent option for many chronic conditions including fatigue, immune deficiencies, and stress. Homeopathic medicines, massage, counseling , detoxification guidance, heavy metal chelation , nutritional guidance and herbal supplements are treatments of naturopathic medicine.

In general, after this visit I had a better understanding of naturopathic medicine and its treatments. Our contemporary society needs such natural medicine that treats the whole person and increases individual vitality and quality of life.

Naturopathy seeks to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body's inherent power to regain harmony and balance. Naturopathy is a wellness-focused health system but to get the best out of naturopathy one should go to a certified naturopathic practitioner who has experience in this field. Practitioner without recognized qualifications and experience is best to avoided. If you’d like to find out more on what naturopathy is? Use this link http://www.gezagolli.info/
