"This school of thought(which often goes under the unwieldy name of total quality management) recommends that organizations become "continuously improving" or "learning organizations"." Very much on the model of a loosely coupled system, such flexible organization can respond quickly to changes in its environment and can initiate changes in innovative ways." (Martin,p.144)
Emily Martin in her book "flexible Bodies", chapter 7, illustrates the use of the concept"flexibility"in a wide variety of domains in contemporary culture, such as: immunology, computer software, economics, human body, government organizations, psychology and feminism, and how these flexible systems can adjust to the changes in their environments in innovative ways.

The contemporary era of economy is a time when workers are flexible, job descriptions are elastic and technology is always changing. Entrepreneurs and professionals, with demanding schedules, may find online courses as effective means for keeping pace with economic changes in their local environment and in the global marketplace. Parents, caregivers, working adults-and anyone who needs flexibility may also find online learning to be a convenient way to combine studies and life. People who earn their degrees online have the option of choosing when and where they will do their coursework. Online degree offers flexible education. This can be an exceptionally handy thing for people who have multiple responsibilities in life with limited time.
"Flexibility lies at the heart of the continuously changing, responsive organization(Hiam 1990:87). (Martin, p.145) Hence, education like many other domains is changing continuously to meet the demands of the new economy era.
